Your hair contains hydrogen bonds in its cortex, and it's these that make hair wavey and curly, and give it shape. When these hydrogen bonds become broken down your hair loses its natural appearance, natural form and flattens out, but these bonds can come together again when your hair is wetted.
The first hair straighteners using flat irons appeared in 1909 when Issac Shero lodged a patent for hair straightener comprising of two flat irons which were heated and pressed together. Many years later, we saw ceramic and electrical hair straighteners being introduced, allowing for adjustment of heat temeratures.
